When you think about the environment, remembering the phrase “all in the same boat” can help keep your priorities on track.
Recently winning the Brisbane City Council’s Healthy Waterways Award, the Readymix “Friends of Sandy Creek” team understands this philosophy.
The Healthy Waterways Awards program celebrates and recognises the contributions and achievements made toward improving the health and sustainability of the waterways and catchments of South East Queensland, Australia.
“Friends of Sandy Creek” is an initiative of Readymix in conjunction with the government–owned corporation, Powerlink Queensland, and the Bremer Catchment Association. It was formed in 2002 to help restore the health of the Sandy Creek catchment area at Tivoli, Queensland, Australia.
“The project served to redress historically poor management of the area’s natural resource assets by undertaking a weed eradication program,” says Mick Horan, Oxley Creek and Tivoli quarry manager. “It involved the removal of an infested stretch of riparian creek bank and also looked at revegetation of the area with native species.”
The removal of the weeds and re–planting of the creek bed is working to reduce soil erosion, increase the biodiversity of the area and improve the water quality of the creek and the Bremer River.
Congratulations to all involved in this project!
