Not only does material recycling in block plants save money on raw materials, waste material cleanup and removal, it also improves plant housekeeping and frees up yard space. With all these benefits in mind, Florida’s block manufacturing teams have every reason to step up their waste material recycling program this year.
Due to the success of block recycling in northern Florida, the program has now been transferred to the remainder of the plants in both the south and west areas of the state. This will more than double the amount of material recycled and the money saved. Last year, northern region plants worked through issues including collection, segregation, material handling, mix design, and batching problems – all inherent to recycling. With these problems now resolved, implementation in other plants is proving a relatively easy transition.
The Riviera Beach manufacturing plant is also helping develop and enhance the recycling program by crushing and recycling cull block via a portable crusher.
“Without a crusher, block plants are limited to recycling the small sized material that collects on the plant floor,” says Donnie Welty, Riviera Beach block plant superintendent. “With this ability to recycle whole or partial blocks, plants can significantly increase the amount of recyclable material. It’s good news for recycling.”
