Excellence in concrete awards for Rinker Materials

For Rinker Materials, the expression “everything happens in threes” is very fitting. Adding to the three safety accolades awarded to the Southern, Yuma and Central districts, Rinker Materials’ Portland/Vancouver region received three awards at the 25th Annual Oregon Concrete and Aggregate Producers Association Excellence in Concrete awards banquet.

The highest award was first place in the Mixed–Use Category for the Portland State University Broadway Housing project. This 10 storey residential hall required 13,000 cubic yards of concrete.

For the more technically minded, construction began in June 2003 with two mat slab–footing pours. Almost 4,000 cubic yards of 5,000 PSI 56 day concrete was poured, with production averaging 250 cubic yards per hour. In addition, more than 3,000 cubic yards of 6,000 PSI plasticized concrete was used in the columns and shear walls. It was an extraordinary concrete mix that will serve this housing project for many years to come.

The other awards for Rinker Materials were runner up in the Craftsmanship Category for Hoffman Plaza and second runner up in the Mixed Use Category for the Drano Lake project. “Well done to all our employees involved in these projects,” says Karl Watson Jr, president of Rinker Materials West. “They exemplify the high standard of our product and our commitment to technical innovation and excellence in concrete.”

SCL quarry putting Zero4Life™ into practice

SCL quarry in Miami has done it again! For the ninth year in a row our people have completed the year without a single recordable injury.

As if nine years of zero recordable injuries wasn’t enough, they have also achieved an astounding 22 years without a lost time accident. This operation is a great example of putting our Zero4Life™ principles into practice.

The SCL quarry started out as a small location feeding raw material to the Miami cement mill. From these humble beginnings, it has undergone some major changes to improve and expand its operations. Even with extensive changes and growing from just 10 employees in 2003, to 25 employees at present, attention to safety remains at the top of the priority list.

“Here at SCL we put safety at the forefront of everything we do. We don’t just talk the talk, we walk the walk,” says quarry manager Kelly Tribble.

Congratulations to SCL quarry employees for showing that Zero4Life™ is achievable.
