Hurricane Charley hit Charlotte Harbor and Orlando, Florida, on 13 August causing death and destruction and leaving thousands without power and water. Exiting into the Atlantic Ocean at Daytona Beach, Charley left behind damage estimated at around US$15 billion.
Thankfully, all Rinker Materials employees weathered Hurricane Charley without significant injury.
The efforts made by the Rinker Materials businesses to aid and comfort families in need was extraordinary. Where possible, portable generators were secured and utilized to provide household power. Ice, water, batteries, canned goods, grills and charcoal were also collected and distributed. Teams of Rinker Materials people helped to clear trees and debris from employee homes, distribute gift certificates for hot meals at locally operating restaurants and provide alternate transport.

To assist in the relief efforts, the "Hurricane Charley Relief Fund" was set up through the Rinker Materials Credit Union. This fund received contributions from Rinker Materials employees throughout the United States and from Readymix employees in Australia. Utilizing those funds, Rinker Materials aid teams moved quickly after Hurricane Charley hit to help the wider community in need.
A team of Rinker Materials employees took one tractor-trailer of ice and a second of water and coolers to Punta Gorda. Here they met up with employees from our Fort Myers Alico Road quarry who were providing a cookout for hurricane victims. Water and ice were distributed at the cookout, and were also delivered "door to door" in the impacted neighborhoods.
