Rinker Materials Sand's Division 474 Sand Mine in Florida recently hosted a three-day workshop in habitat preservation and education at the 474 Engstrom Outdoor Classroom.
In addition to Rinker Materials employees, participants from organisations such as BP, Department of Defence, BASF, Bristol Myers Squibb, PEPCO, Waste Management, and the Florida Trail Association attended the workshops.
Attendees were impressed by the commitment of our company and our employees to habitat preservation and education. So much so that they were keenly grabbing ideas to take back to their respective companies!
The 474 Sand mine won the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) 2002 Corporate Lands for Learning of the Year award for their education programs focusing on conservation and wetland reclamation activities at Engstrom Lake. They are also looking forward to the Wildlife Habitat Councils' symposium next year, and seeing even more Rinker Materials wildlife sites certified.
This successful event would not have been possible without the tireless dedication and hard work of our employee volunteers.

Was it hot! Yes, very hot at the Rinker Materials Alico Quarry in Davenport, Florida, when students, teachers and parents from the Jupiter Environmental Research ∧ Field Studies Academy (JERFSA) planted 15,000 wetland plants at the quarry's mitigation area. But the effort was worth it, because the 8-acre area looked great when the work was finished.
This was the first of several planting events planned to complete the mitigation requirements at the quarry. The students will receive Community Service hours, as 200 are needed for graduation during the four-year program.
There are three more plantings scheduled later in the year, when Rinker Materials is partnering with Florida Gulf Coast University, as well as JERFSA, to plant another 36 acres on the wetlands of the Alico Quarry. The planting will be complete in December.
