Readymix Holdings' very own Quarry Emergency Response team.

Mining industry innovation award.

Readymix Holdings' Bohle Quarry in Queensland has won the Queensland Mining Industry Training Award (QMITA) for Innovation/Best Practice Extractive Company of the Year.

The idea for a fully operational Quarry Emergency team came up when Chris Wulf, the area manager for Readymix Holdings North Queensland, wanted to find a way to promote health and safety in a new and exciting way for his quarry employees, as well as influence cultural change within the workforce at Bohle Quarry.

While large compared to most quarries in the area, the development of its own emergency response team is still seen as a huge commitment by the company and its people. The Department of Natural Resources and Mines recognise this commitment and supports the actions of the quarry and its people in "lifting the bar" on safety and emergency preparedness within the quarrying industry.

The team has been sticking to a rigorous training schedule that has seen them gain skills in all anticipated emergency response situations they are likely to encounter onsite. It has provided many benefits. Close working relationships and networks have been formed which will prove invaluable in times of crisis. But more importantly, the impact it will have on the site morale, first aid skill levels and overall safety culture will be wide spread.

The team got to test their skills against other emergency response teams in the Annual Queensland Mines Rescue Challenge held in Townsville in August. The team placed fifth out of an overall 12 teams, and placed second in two events (vertical rescue and underground search and rescue). This is significant considering the preparation time was only eight months and other teams have existed for many years. The strong commitment and high skill level the team has shown throughout their training will not only mean they will be very competitive but also very willing to learn and share ideas with other organisations.

The commitment that these people, their families and Readymix Holdings management are showing is helping set new standards that ensure the continual improvement of safety and health within the quarrying industry.
