Rinker Materials Environmental Services wins excellence in safety award

Rinker Materials’ Environmental Services (RES), Florida, has recently won the United States National Safety Council’s Safety Leadership Award. RES has achieved five years without sustaining a Lost Time Injury – that is, zero lost time or recordable injuries.

RES was established in 1991 to provide a service to the community and to the Rinker Materials Miami cement mill. RES receives petroleum-contaminated soils, cleans the soils by thermally removing the petroleum-based hydrocarbons from the soil, and then delivers the treated soil to the cement plant. By utilising the soil as a source of silica, one of the raw materials for making clinker, the Miami cement plant saves over US$1 million a year.

With only a small group of Rinker Materials people in charge of this technologically sophisticated operation, they need to work closely as a team, with everyone crosstrained to help one another when the need arises. Taking all steps necessary to ensure the highest possible safety management is of paramount importance.

Readymix’s achievement in environmental excellence awards

Readymix has been awarded several statebased awards from the Cement Concrete and Aggregates Association industry environmental awards programs. These awards are aimed at encouraging improved environmental practice within the industry.

Each year, member companies are invited to enter environmentally friendly plants in various categories such as water management, most improved, innovation and best overall plant. Judging teams from within the industry assess the performance of nominated plants. In some cases the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is invited to assist with final judging.

Readymix performed extremely well for 2004, achieving several awards. Well done to everyone who is helping to turn our plants into excellent examples of environmental management for our industry.
