Davenport sand mine wins safety award

Industry awards are an important part of benchmarking with peers and encouraging improvement of safety and operations. Rinker is committed to raising the bar for safety and winning awards for our safety efforts is an important part of rewarding our drive for Zero4Life.

Improving wastage and recycling at Rinker Materials’ Davenport sand mine can add a further accolade to Rinker’s list of safety achievements. The operation recently won the US Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the National Mining Associa- tion (NMA) Sentinels of Safety Award for the Dredging Group cat- egory.

Late last year, the MSHA and the NMA recognised eight US mining operations for their outstanding safety record during 2003 at the annual Sentinels of Safety awards program. The winners were an- nounced at an awards ceremony at the Las Vegas Convention Centre in conjunction with MINExpo, the world’s largest and most compre- hensive exposition for the mining industry.

Davenport earned the award for working 76,995 hours in 2003 without a lost time accident. Da- venport also passed 2003 without any injuries and was runner-up for operations in 2002.

Other Rinker Materials operations also scored well in the awards last year. The Alico Road quarry (South- west, Florida) and Gregg quarry (North of Tampa, Florida) took sec- ond and third place respectively for the Quarry Group. Rinker Materials 19th Ave and Maricopa (Arizona) were first and fourth runners up for the Bank and Pit Group.

To qualify for a Sentinels of Safety award, a site must compile at least 30,000 employee work-hours during the year without a lost-time injury or fatality.

“These awards for Rinker Materials are excellent examples of Rinker’s commitment to safety in its operations and our group-wide policy of Zero4Life”, says Rinker chief executive David Clarke. “Well done to all our operations that achieved these accolades”.
